Uchi Houston: Reviews & Ratings
I ordered the Hama Chili, Spicy Crunchy Tuna, Hirame Nigiri, Wagyu Tartar, Fried Milk, and the Hirame Usuzukuri. Hama Chili — 5 stars. Every single time. It’s bright, citrusy, clean, and just melts. This is one of my favorite dishes at both Uchi and Uchiko. Never disappoints. Spicy Crunchy Tuna — 3 stars. It was good. Not bad. But compared to similar spicy crunchy dishes I’ve had at Uchiko, it just didn’t hit the same. It felt a little one note. Hirame Nigiri — 5 stars. So delicate. So simple. Perfect texture. This is the kind of dish that reminds you why Japanese cuisine is elite. Wagyu Tartar — 2 stars. I love the concept. I love the idea of the fried toast with it. But it leaned too salty for me, and it overpowered the richness of the beef. I wanted to love it more than I actually did. Hirame Usuzukuri — 5 stars. Light, refreshing, thinly sliced perfection. It felt elegant and intentional. Fried Milk — 5 stars. I don’t even argue about this one. It’s warm, soft, balanced, and just comforting in the best way. Overall? Uchi was good. Very good. But if I’m comparing it to my experience at Uchiko… Uchiko still wins for me. It was so good that I almost teared up, and it maybe because of the items I ordered but the entire experience felt more immersive. Uchi satisfied me. Uchiko transported me.
Uchi absolutely lives up to the hype. The atmosphere is intimate and stylish, the service is attentive and knowledgeable, and every dish is beautifully prepared with incredible flavor. Nothing felt rushed, and every recommendation was spot-on. It’s definitely a splurge, but the quality and overall experience make it worth it. Perfect for date night or a special occasion. Would happily return.
This sushi place truly lives up to its premium reputation. Everything we ordered was incredibly fresh and good, you can really taste the quality in every bite. It’s absolutely worth every penny. The service was also excellent. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made the whole experience even better. From start to finish, everything was top notch. Highly recommend if you’re looking for high quality sushi and great service!
Had the most amazing happy hour time at Uchi with Hudson!!! We came for a celebration and made us feel very welcome and appreciated. The happy hour menus were so yummy and fresh, and the service took time to explain each dish and to say how to best eat each one. Will come back on another day to try different things!!
Just a lovely experience from start to finish! Excellent customer service, carefully curated dishes and, a HH Omakase that can't be beat! The Suzuki was HEAVENLY! Would literally go back just for that! The coconut tapioca finisher was just perfect! My tummy is HAPPY! HIGHLY recommend!
I used to come to the Austin location as a college student (circa 2008) for happy hour, and I’m still coming back now in Houston a career and two kids later. Throughout the years, they’ve been consistent. I love and respect that. The devotion to quality is 10/10. It’s definitely more high-end, but they’re so welcoming with kids, which makes it feel like the restaurant can grow as our family grows. And the food is unreal. Simply unreal. The waiters are trained to a T, so they can tell you where every morsel of the exquisite yumminess came from, and somehow it’s charming instead of annoying. Pro tip: their signature dessert now comes in a pint of ice cream form. Worth every penny.
If Uchi has no fans I’m dead. I love this restaurant group with all my heart. My friends and I always say this is the best sushi hands down you can find anywhere in the US. From Oheya to Uchi, all the plates are so unique and innovative. It’s so worth the hype!! I’ve been to their locations in Austin, Houston, Miami, and LA and not one of them misses. The staff is always phenomenal. This was our 20th+ time there for my sisters birthday and they treated us beautifully and gifted us two plates. For dishes, you can’t go wrong but as a veteran, their Hama chili is the best thing on the menu. Most makimono roles are amazing so you can’t go wrong but we tried the spring roll recently and it’s a new fan favorite. Also a new try was the Hirame crudo with crunchy quinoa, sooo underrated and a new favorite!! The sen role and the sake roll with apple are also amazing. Their rotations of oysters with mignonette are so unique as well and my favorite oysters anywhere!!! For a vegetable option, the Brussels sprouts are great to share with the table. The coconut tapioca dessert is underrated and my favorite but the fried milk is probably the fan favorite in my friend group. Definitely ask for server recommendations (thank you michaela!!) because they always know best. Everything is so thought out and they take care of you so well even across the country. P.S. begging uchi to open a nyc location
Great time at uchi today with a few big misses. Took my mom for her first time for her birthday, and our server was amazing. Our favorites were the uchi salad, hama chili, nasu nigiri, and ocean trout. The uchi salad being a standout with its fresh taste. Our big misses were the rice related sushi, and the wagyu carpaccio. The rice was pretty mushy and wet which was surprising for such an upscale sushi restaurant. It made the sea bream nigiri and short rib gunkan feel a little gross with the textural differences. It made us a little sad to end the meal with that gunkan. Wagyu carpaccio was just too strong and fish saucy for us, compared to the rest of the food, which took us out of the meal.
